The inscription reads: “To Capt.n John Wootten, a token of kind regard from his passenger in 1837 & 8, W— Kopke, of Rio de Janeiro.”
Captain John Wootten: Historical records mention a Captain John C. Wootten (1794–1871), who was extensively engaged in the East India trade and was considered one of the oldest sea captains sailing from his port. However, it’s unclear if this is the same individual referenced in the inscription.

W— Kopke: The name “Kopke” has notable historical ties to the wine industry in Portugal and Brazil. Founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopkë, C. N. Kopke is the oldest port wine export company. The Kopke family, of German origin, established themselves in Portugal and expanded their business ventures, including activities in Brazil. While specific records of a “W— Kopke” from Rio de Janeiro during 1837–1838 are not readily available, it’s plausible that he was a member of this prominent family involved in trade between Brazil and Europe during that period.
Given the historical context, it’s likely that the inscription refers to a voyage between Brazil and another destination during 1837–1838, involving individuals connected to significant trade and commerce activities of that era.
During his seafaring life he was very active in promoting the welfare of sea-men. He was the originator of the “Seamen’s Library Society, ” established in 1836, and which had for its object the placing on board of each ship sailing from this port a library for the use of the sailors.
As а navigator he was eminently successful, and was always equal to any emergency. Upon one occasion, by means of an improvised apparatus,he was enabled to save his ship from sinking and bring her safely into port
